Sarah Adams: The Camel Estuary

Over the course of one winter, a decade ago, I was fortunate to be granted vehicle access to the track from Lelizzick to Stepper Point, and this enabled me to make a series of oil studies of the Camel Estuary in its many moods and, indeed, some pretty wild weather, all from the comfort of my van.

There were so many memorable times. In mid-December a 'weather bomb' stormed through, and the van rocked violently as sea foam from Butter Hole blew up and over us. I painted Brea Hill and Daymer Bay shrouded in mist and rain, but then just before the year's end a hard frost on the moors reflected light up into a cloudless sky. With a flask of coffee and my elderly lurcher Fluke curled up in her bed beside me, I spent the days documenting the changing light and tides.

Many visitors have commented on these paintings over the years, arrayed along the beams in my studio. They have been a precious resource, and a wonderful reminder of my years with Fluke. Finally, with exciting future plans afoot, it feels like the right time to let some of them go.

Fifteen pieces from the collection are now on show at The Padstow Studio.

I would also like to thank Charlie and Jane Watson-Smythe again for giving me such a wonderful opportunity.

Waterfall at Lundy Bay II

Oil on board, 45 x 40cm, (excluding frame)

A sister picture to another study, exhibited last year in London. This waterfall, tumbling across rocks and onto the sand at the back of Lundy Bay, is such a wonderful subject, and it was hard to choose the best vantage point.

Study of the Buttress Arch in Sunlight

Oil on board, 30 x 15cm, (excluding frame)

I’ve spent so many hours drawing this arch over the last fifteen years, in all weathers and seasons, on Spring lows and neap high tides. This was the last study before it fell, leaving just a slender piece, hanging on.

‘Study of an Arch At Mawgan Porth

Oil on board, 24 x 24cm, (excluding frame)

This study started life as a composition sketch for a far larger painting, which was exhibited at the Maas Gallery in September 2023. One of a series of small pieces that I have enjoyed returning to recently, re-examining the structure and the way light reflects up into the arch.

A study of Brea Hill from St George’s Well

Oil on board, 45 x 40cm, (excluding frame)

This small gap in the cliff changes radically through the year, and sometimes, for a short while, the sand levels drop just enough to gain access. The view out frames Brea Hill perfectly, and there’s a ‘handshake’ of rock across the void.

Study of an Arch near Welcombe Mouth

Oil on board, 50 x 20cm, (excluding frame)

I’ve really enjoyed revisiting this arch to complete the study - from the comfort of my studio. It took over two hours to clamber along the high tide line, just to get a short time to draw here while the sand was revealed. A very special place, and an extraordinary rock formation.

Gully at Treyarnon Point

The rocky shoreline between Treyarnon and Constantine is riven by deep gullies, and the barnacle-clad rocks can glow gold in the sun.

Treyarnon Point to The Quies

Oil on board, 37 x 39 cm (including frame)

One of a pair of studies, looking from the same spot. There is a naturally formed infinity pool here, home to a beautiful type of wrack that has electric blue and turquoise tipped fronds.

‘Polzeath from Hawker's Cove’

oil on board, 42 x 52 cm including frame

A gully, tucked away between Hawker’s Cove and Stepper Point, cuts through the extraordinary turquoise and mauve bedrock of the Camel Estuary. The Doom Bar is visible, and beyond it the outline of the opposite bank, Greenaway’s and Polzeath.
